Fertility-sparing surgery can be performed on gynaecological malignancies (cervical, endometrial, epithelial and ovarian cancers or borderline ovarian tumours) to remove tissues that comprise of cancer cells whilst maintaining reproductive ability.
What is the objective of this surgery?
Fertility-sparing surgery allows women of child-bearing age to preserve their fertility potential. The uterus or at least part of one ovary are preserved if possible. The surgery is performed by a gynaecological-oncologist.
This treatment option is ideal for women presenting with an early-stage invasive tumour and a low risk of recurrence. Where fertility-sparing surgery is not feasible, it may be suitable to offer in-vitro fertilisation with cryopreservation prior to definitive treatment.
