What is Egg Freezing?
Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, offers women the opportunity to preserve their fertility for later stages in life. Through a carefully planned process, eggs are retrieved, frozen using fertility preservation techniques, and stored until the woman is ready to utilise them.
Why Freeze my Eggs?
All women are born with a definite set of eggs in their lifetime. As a woman gets older, the quantity and quality of the eggs decline. Egg freezing allows women to freeze their healthy eggs when they are younger and utilise them when they are ready to conceive. Egg freezing is now available for elective or medical reasons.
Benefits of Elective Egg Freezing:
- Allows women to extend their reproductive timelines
- Reduces the pressure of age-related fertility decline
- Increases the chance of a successful pregnancy later in life when they are ready for motherhood
- Provide women with the time and freedom to meet the right person without feeling the need to settle down for the sole purpose of having kid
When to Freeze My Eggs?
The current age limit for elective egg freezing in Singapore is between 21 to 37 years old.
Process of elective egg freezing:
This involves ovarian stimulation with hormonal medications to promote the growth of multiple eggs. The follicle development is closely monitored through ultrasound scans and once the eggs reach maturity, they are retrieved surgically under sedation. These retrieved eggs are then cryopreserved using fertility preservation techniques such as vitrification, an ultra-rapid freezing method, and stored in special liquid nitrogen containers until it is time for them to be warmed up and fertilised.
