The importance of folic acid

What is folic acid?

Folic acid, or folate (the natural form of folic acid) is a type of vitamin B that our body uses to make new cells. Folic acid is an important nutrient that supports the rapid growth of fetal tissues and organs during the first trimester. Our bodies cannot store folic acid, which is why you need to get folic acid from food or supplements on a regular basis. (more…)

Azoospermia Condition in Men

Infertility is not uncommon in present society. Very often, people would think that the issue with infertility lies mainly in women. However, men can also be the cause of infertility between couples. Azoospermia is a medical term used when there are no sperm in the ejaculate (semen). This could be caused by a blockage along the reproductive tract which prevents sperm from entering the ejaculate, or it can be non obstructive whereby it is caused by a decrease in sperm production by the testis. The benefits of Pulse-driven ICSI

What is Infertility?

Infertility is defined as not being able to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse between a man and a woman. Around 15% of couples in Singapore faced infertility [1]. Fortunately, there are various ways to treat infertility. ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is one of the treatment methods to overcome infertility. (more…)

Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH) Technology

What is Laser Assisted Hatching?

A human embryo has a soft outer ‘shell’ called the zona pellucida (or zona for short). When an embryo is five or six days old and is at the stage known as a blastocyst, it needs to hatch out of the zona. Once the embryo has hatched out of the zona, it is able to implant into the lining of the womb. If the embryo does not hatch a pregnancy cannot occur. The embryologists can assist the hatching process using laser assisted hatching (LAH) technology if the embryo does not hatch naturally at the time of embryo transfer. (more…)

Embryo Cryopreservation: How well do embryos survive after freeze thaw process in IVF?

In-vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a fertility treatment which involves stimulating of the ovaries to produce a good number of eggs. Unfortunately, the process of stimulating the ovaries may disrupt the endometrium and could impact negatively on the implantation and pregnancy rate, if the embryos are transferred within days after Oocyte Pick-Up (OPU) [1]. In order to circumvent this problem, elective frozen embryo transfer (FET) has gained popularity for several years now. This involves freezing the embryos (also known as embryo cryopreservation), which is then later thawed and transferred into the uterus with minimal or no hormonal intervention. Studies have reported evidences supporting elective FET in reducing the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation (OHSS) and achieving higher pregnancy rate [2]. (more…)
