Understanding Endometriosis: Symptoms, Treatments and Fertility options available

Endometriosis is a chronic condition that affects millions of women worldwide. It can cause various symptoms, affect fertility, and pose challenges for those trying to conceive. It is important to understand the symptoms of endometriosis, the effect of endometriosis on egg quality, and the fertility options available.

In endometriosis, endometrial-like tissue grows outside of the uterus. Although symptoms can vary from woman to woman, endometriosis may cause pelvic pain, painful periods, heavy menstrual bleeding, and pain during sexual intercourse. Some may also experience fatigue, digestive issues, and infertility. Retrograde menstruation, hormonal imbalances, genetic factors, and immune system dysfunction are believed to contribute to the development of endometriosis. In addition, factors such as early onset of menstruation, shorter menstrual cycles, and a family history of the condition can increase the risk.

Endometriosis may damage the egg quality through oxidative stress and hormonal imbalances. Understanding the potential damage to egg quality is crucial for women with endometriosis who are planning to conceive. Depending on individuals’ condition, treatments may include hormonal therapy, laparoscopic surgery to remove endometriosis tissue, or fertility treatments with assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Last but not least, making healthy lifestyle choices, such as maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress levels, and avoiding smoking, may improve overall egg quality.
